Kohler Mayfield Kitchen Single Bowl Sink Black
The [black] Mayfield comes in three variations:
K 5964 1 7 one hole
K 5964 3 7 three hole
K 5964 4 7 four hole
We installed a Mayfield in a house we renovated. The kitchen was too small for a typically-sized (33" wide) sink. However, the Mayfield's single bowl is larger than either bowl of most double (or triple) sinks, and the back ledge is large enough for sponges, dishwasher liquid, etc. Kohler's most popular 25" sinks are the Mayfield models.
This is our second Kohler cast iron sink, and the great shape our first [18-year-old] sink is still in, convinced us to go with cast iron again.
There is no perfect sink material. The thick porcelain on these sinks can chip if you drop a pot/pan on it from some distance. But, you can chip or dent any sink material. Stainless steel dents, and will lose its luster over time. Anthracite sinks can break (I did that once) or even crack like plastic. Like stainless-steel, hot pots/pans directly from the stove can be put into a Mayfield, something you wouldn't want to do with a Corian sink. Don't use abrasive cleaners, as it's possible to lightly scratch, or dull, the surface. Nothing seems to permanently stain porcelain sinks; if it won't come clean with soap & water, use bleach. Some composite sinks (e.g., Corian) can stain, which, in my book, makes them unsuitable.
A major advantage of drop-in/self-rimming sinks is, if it's ever damaged, replacement is relatively easy - less than a 1/2 day's job for a handy-person. Depending on how they are installed and the sink's material, under-mount sinks can be difficult and very expensive to replace. You might want to research replacement costs before deciding on an under-mount.
Quality of this Mayfield is first rate. The black porcelain is stunning (as opposed to, for example, the rather blase white version). However, black can show stains quicker than a white model. Mayfields are available in Roussillion Red, white, biscuit, almond, sandbar, Mexican sand, iron cobalt, and black. Garbage disposals are quieter when mounted under cast iron sinks, since the weight absorbs sound.
We choose black cast-iron primarily because it looks elegant and expensive and it stays that way for years. We chose an engineered stone counter top and provided the template so they knew the size of the sink cutout to make. If your counter top is granite, engineered stone, or composite (e.g., Corian), a contractor typically cuts the counter top hole.
Once the sink-hole is properly cut, the only thing you do to "mount" this sink is to set it in place, make sure it's square, and caulk around the perimeter with black silicone seal. It's so heavy, it doesn't use tie-down clips. Mount the faucet and drain, before gently lowering the sink into the cutout area.
25" wide sinks need a minimum sink-base cabinet width of 27". It won't fit in a narrower sink base cabinet.
If your kitchen only has room for a 25" wide sink, this model should be on your short list.
We bought ours locally and when the box was opened on-site, it had a small chip at the faucet hole and one corner was badly damaged. We returned it and ordered a replacement, which is easy to do if you order it locally. Kohler uses small cardboard corner protectors, rather than large masses of Kapox, as they should. Carefully inspect a new sink for damage at your earliest opportunity; at the store BEFORE you accept it, if you buy it locally. If you buy it via the Internet, don't let it sit around assuming it's perfect. One star off for inadequate packaging.
